About Genale Agriculture Union of Coops
The Genale Agriculture Union of Coops (Genale Agri Union) has just been formed (April 2024) for the nine primary irrigation coops that were established by IKEA and UNHCR in 2017.

About the Share Farming ModelThe innovative share farming irrigation model aims to enhance the commercial sustainability of 1,000 ha of irrigated land, operated currently by nine joint refugee/host primary cooperatives with 30km of concrete canals & pumps across nine sites. The model will contribute to local job creation, food security, livestock resilience, and regional import substitution, utilising the perennial Genale River and adjacent fertile soils to produce vegetables, fruit, grains, oilseeds & forage.
The Share Farming Model Is being Implemented jointly by the International Finance Corporation (IFC) and Sahel Agriculture Mauritius (Ltd). IFC, a member of the World Bank Group, is a development institution focused on building the private sector in emerging markets. IFC supports private sector development in Ethiopia through a combination of directly responsible investments in private firms and the provision of technical assistance in support of the Government of Ethiopia’s economic plans, progressive refugee policy, and pledges for inclusive local economic development.
Sahel Agriculture (Mauritius) Ltd, a highly experienced operator with wide ranging experience in  climate-smart agriculture has been selected as the farm management company (ManCo) to work with  the newly created Genale Agri Union of nine primary cooperatives under a share farming,  arrangement. The Sahel team has extensive experience in Africa and has worked with smallholder  farmers across many parts of Africa. Their experience encompasses broad climatic and agricultural experience including lowlands, arid and semi-arid climates. Under IFC’s oversight, Sahel is expected  to help the nine primary cooperatives combine their assets into the Genale Agri Union, a local Operating Company (OpCo), and transfer the necessary skills to transform the current operations into a viable business.
Sahel and IFC are looking to assist the newly formed Genale Agri Union in recruiting a Financial Manager, who would be jointly responsible with Sahel in providing comprehensive support,  to ensure the sustainability of the Union


Objectives of the role

  • To manage all financial aspects and promote the interests of the genale Agri union


Duties and responsibilities

  • Implementation of the approved Annual Budget and longer term Business Plans.
  • Aim to achieve or exceed the target IRR, goals, and objectives in the above plans.
  • Day-to-day control and management of the Agribusiness & Employees and all resources of the Union
  • Assist the Production Manager and the Financial Manager with the implementation and management of approved tier 1 ERP software systems for the production of regular monthly management accounts tax accounts and physical activities.
  • Provide the Management Committee and Sahel with a written monthly report in an agreed format.
  • Provide, together with the Production Manager, written comments for the regular monthly management accounts to include summary statements of profit & loss, cash flow, and balance sheet.
  • Oversee adequate training for all Union employees to ensure that they can efficiently and effectively perform their required duties and functions.
  • Oversee, together with the Production Manager, the day-to day marketing of all produce using your reasonable endeavors to obtain the optimum prices.
  • Oversee, together with the Production Manager, the purchase and supply at optimum prices such inputs for the Union as may be reasonably necessary or appropriate according to the approved annual budget.
  • Oversee together with the Production Manager, the on-farm testing of potential new crop varieties and production techniques to maximize Union profitability.
  • Assist the Union in ensuring that the Coops comply with all local laws and regulations.
  • Ensure the implementation of the Union’s Environment and Social Action Plan.
  • Provide all necessary information to enable the Union to prepare all necessary regulatory reports, filings, and returns.
  • Keep the Management Committee and Sahel fully informed at all times.
  • Promote the interests of the Union, its employees, and members and use best endeavors to extend and grow the Union’s business.
  • Annually assist the Management Committee and Sahel in the compilation of operational budgets and plans for the Union
  • Demonstrate astute & admirable leadership and manage his duties and responsibilities in all aspects through proper planning, organizing, leading, and control.
  • Appoint with the prior written approval of the Management Committee and Sahel the required skilled people.
  • Be responsible for the day-to-day welfare, safety, and security of all Union employees.
  • Maintain firm and fair discipline.
  • Maintain normal relations with the members, local communities, and other key stakeholders.
  • Attend the regular Advisory Meetings with key stakeholders.
  • Maintain normal relations with the Union’s suppliers and service providers.
  • Maintain normal relations with all Government departments.
  • Manage your work within the framework of the laws of the land, acceptable business principles, and expected corporate governance practices.
  • Not submit the Union, the Control Committee, the Management Committee, Sahel, employees, members, and assets to any form of unnecessary operational, financial, investment, or legal risk.
  • Create and implement a sustainable competitive advantage for the Union.
  • Create a healthy and admirable framework of values and culture for the Union.
  • Create a climate of participative management leadership, achievement, and free-thinking in the Union.
  • The selected candidate will be based in the Dollo Ado and Bokolmanyo Woredas in the Liben Zone of  the Somali Region and report to the Union’s Management Committee and the ManCo, with oversight from the Union’s Control Committee. (full details in Appendix 1)
